The flag of the Marshall Islands is a deep blue field with widening diagonal orange and white bands rising from the lower hoist to the upper fly, and a large white 24-pointed star in the upper hoist.
The flag of the Marshall Islands was adopted in 1979 at the beginning of self-government. It was designed by Emlain Kabua after a nationwide design competition. The blue field represents the Pacific Ocean, while the white and orange diagonal bands represent the Ratak and Ralik chains, as well as peace and courage. Their position also evokes the equator south of the islands, and their widening form suggests growth. The 24-pointed white star represents the nation’s 24 electoral districts, with four longer points marking Majuro, Jaluit, Wotje, and Ebeye. The star also alludes to the Christian cross.
