South Africa adopted this national flag on 27 April 1994, and it was first raised at the inaugural ceremony on 10 May 1994. It was designed by Frederick Gordon Brownell. Its central Y-shape symbolizes the convergence of the country's diverse peoples and their shared path forward. No official meaning is assigned to the six colors, though the design intentionally combines colors associated with South Africa's colonial history and liberation movements.
